C.K. Dexter-Haven (played by Trevor Eve), a successful popular jazz musician, lives in a mansion near his ex-wife's Tracy Lord's family estate. She is on the verge of marrying a man blander and safer than Dex, who tries to win Tracy's heart again. Mike Connor, an undercover tabloid reporter, also falls for Tracy while covering the nuptials for Spy magazine. Tracy must choose between the three men as she discovers that "safe" can mean "deadly dull" when it comes to husbands and life.

Trevor Eve returns to the theatre after two years in Los Angeles, where he played the twins of the title in the film 'The Corsican Brothers' and starred in the TV series 'Shadow Chsers'. He graduated from RADA with the Bancroft Gold Medal and went straight to the Liverpool Everyman, where his many roles included Paul McCartney in Willy Russel's John, Paul, George, Ringo - and Bert, which later transferred to the Albery Theatre and won the Standard and the plays and Players awards for Best Musical. Other stage productions include 'A Bit Of Rough, directed by Max Stafford Clark, and 'Filumena' directed by Franco Zeggirelli, and the title role in Howard Brenton's
'The Genius' at the Royal Court. He went on to win both the Laurence Olivier Award and the Variety Club Of Great Britain Award for Best Actor for his performance as James Leeds in 'Children Of A Lesser God' at the Albery Theatre. His film debut as the dapper solicitor, Jonathan Harker, in John Badham's 'Dracula' coincided with his explosion onto the TV screen as the scruffy private eye 'Shoestring', for which the Variety Club voted him the Most Promising Actor for that year. His other television work spans 'Hindle Wakes' directed by Laurence Olivier; The Portrait; Jamaica Inn; A Brother's Tale; and Lace. Just prior to High Society, he starred in the Granada TV film 'A Wreath Of Roses' by Elizabeth Taylor.
